Pedro Páramo is an upcoming Mexican magic realism drama film directed by Rodrigo Prieto from a script written Mateo Gil, based on the 1955 novel by Juan Rulfo. It stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as the eponymous character and Tenoch Huerta as Juan Preciado.[1]
The film is set to premiere in the Platform Prize section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024.[2]
In May 2023, it was announced that filming had begun on a feature film adaptation of the novel Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo set at Netflix.[3] The film was directed by Rodrigo Prieto from a script by Mateo Gil, with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo cast as the eponymous protagonist and Tenoch Huerta as Juan Preciado. Gil was previously attached to write and direct the film in 2007, but that iteration of the project felt through. [4] Other cast members included Ilse Salas, Mayra Batalla, Héctor Kotsifakis, Roberto Sosa, Dolores Heredia, Giovanna Zacarías, Noé Hernández and Yoshira Escárrega. Gustavo Santaolalla served as composer, with Anna Terrazas in charge of costume design and Eugenio Caballero and Carlos Y. Jacques of production design. Stacy Perskie of Redrum Production and Rafael Ley of Woo Films produced the film.[1]
In July 2024, Pedro Páramo was announced as part of the Platform section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival scheduled for September 2024 and is expected to be released on Netflix later that year.
