Intimations is a 2020 collection of essays by writer Zadie Smith. Smith began writing the book around the time the COVID-19 pandemic began in the United States, and completed it soon after the murder of George Floyd.[1]

The essays discuss topics including creative writing, the pandemic, and the murder of George Floyd.[2] __TOC__

Reception

Intimations received generally positive reviews. According to Book Marks, the book received "positive" reviews based on twenty-four critic reviews with fourteen being "rave" and seven being "positive" and three being "mixed".[3] In Books in the Media, a site that aggregates critic reviews of books, the book received a (3.69 out of 5) from the site which was based on six critic reviews.[4] On Bookmarks September/October 2020 issue, a magazine that aggregates critic reviews of books, the book received a (4.0 out of 5) based on critic reviews with a critical summary saying, "Despite the essays' unevenness, "Smith has taken a mirror and reflected us back to ourselves during the earliest moments of this crisis," concludes NPR. "It is up to us to change if we don't like what we see".[5] [6]

Constance Grady, writing for Vox, referred to Smith's essays about current events as occasionally "facile" and that the collection was best when addressing the nature and utility of writing.[7]
